Workplace illuminance measurements
Illuminance measurements are required when new workstations are put into service. This regards permanent workplaces – both in offices as well as at manufacturing and service companies. A permanent workplace, according to OHS regulations, is a place (area) where an employee works at least 4 hours a day.
Illuminance measurement
Why is proper illuminance crucial?
Efficiency
Properly designed lighting improves employee performance by up to 36%.
Mood
The right light colour ensure the right psychological climate at work. Cold colours enhance the feeling of coldness and give a sense of security, while warm colours put people in a good mood and cheerfulness.
Focus
Poor lighting makes work accidents more likely since the ability to spot hazards is reduced.
Lighting at work
What should you know?
When to perform illuminance measurements and how long is the measurement report valid?
Illuminance measurements are necessary before creating a new workstation. When an employee starts to work, the employer must be sure that adequate artificial lighting is provided. Following such measurements, a measurement protocol is submitted to the employer. The illuminance measurement protocol is valid indefinitely – unless conditions, such as location of lighting points, workstation, distance and height change. It is assumed that lighting is maintained in good working order, therefore the results of illuminance measurements should be the same on the day of the measurement and afterwards. According to OHS regulations the validity of the above mentioned measurements never expires.
Documentation, or protocol of illuminance measurements
A protocol of illuminance measurements is a confirmation of the examinations. It is submitted a couple of days after completion of the examinations. The protocol is the key document as well as proof of fulfilment of the obligation under general OHS regulations. Our company retains e-protocols for a period of 5 years. During this time our customers can have a duplicate free of charge.
Legal basis for illuminance measurements
The obligation of workplace illuminance measurements is iposed by the Regulation of the Minister of Labour and Social Policy of 26 September 1997 (with subsequent amendments) on general provisions on occupational safety and health: § 26. 2. Irrespective of daylight, it is necessary to ensure electric lighting in work space, featuring parameters consistent with Polish Standards. Hence electric lighting parameters should fulfil the requirements of PN-EN 12464-1 Light and Lighting. Lighting of work places. Part 1: Indoor work places. Now, if such protocol is not available during an audit by the State Labour Inspectorate, this may lead to a fine being imposed on the Employer
